The analysis estimated all emissions related to the Jathropha plantations on unused degraded land, their sequestration impact, fertiliser production and application, oil extraction and processing (transesterification), logistics and end-use. For the analysis methodologies were used which were approved by the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The project concluded that the sequestration impact and avoided emissions from replacing fossil fuels, far outweighted the emissions from biofuel production.
Unfortunately, the company which planned to produce the Jathropha biofuels was unable to reach financial closure on its investments.
